5 Festive Activities for a Fireworks-Free Fourth of July Celebration
The Fourth of July, a day that commemorates the independence of the United States, is traditionally associated with fireworks displays that light up the night sky. However, given Oregon's fire-conscious mindset, we thought we'd share some alternative ways to celebrate this patriotic holiday without fireworks. Here are five festive activities that will allow you to create lasting memories with friends, family, and your Homeowners' Association (HOA) community on the Fourth of July while embracing a different kind of celebration.

- Patriotic Picnic: Gather your friends, family. and/or neighbors for a delightful patriotic picnic in a local park or your backyard. Decorate the picnic area with red, white, and blue tablecloths, balloons, and streamers to create a festive ambiance. Prepare classic American dishes such as hot dogs, hamburgers, and apple pie. Don't forget to pack refreshing drinks and patriotic-themed desserts. Engage in outdoor games like frisbee or sack races to add some excitement to the gathering. (Tip: Here's the recipe for some delicious 4th of July popsicles, seen above!)
- Community Parade: Participating in or attending a community parade is a great way to show your patriotism and engage with your local community. Many towns and cities organize Fourth of July parades that feature marching bands, floats, and various community organizations. Specifically in Bend, there's the annual 4th of July Pet Parade where pet's dress patriotically while onlookers cheer for them! Check out your city's Chamber of Commerce and/or Events website for more info.
- Outdoor Movie Night: Transform your backyard into an outdoor movie theater for a relaxing and entertaining Fourth of July experience. Set up a large projector screen or hang a white sheet, arrange comfortable seating with blankets and cushions, and invite friends and family for a movie night under the stars. Select patriotic films or classics that evoke a sense of American history and values. Enjoy popcorn, snacks, and refreshing beverages as you watch the movie together.
- Water Fun: If you're fortunate enough to live near a beach, lake, or pool, embrace the summer spirit by planning a day of water-based activities. Organize a beach volleyball tournament, go paddleboarding, have a friendly swimming race, or simply relax on a floatie and enjoy the sunshine. Bring along a cooler filled with refreshing drinks and pack a delicious picnic to enjoy by the water's edge. Water activities are not only a great way to beat the heat but also provide a fun and memorable experience for all ages. (Check out how #teamAperion does lake day below!)
- DIY Crafts and Decorations: Get creative with DIY crafts and decorations that celebrate the spirit of independence. Gather your loved ones and engage in crafting sessions where you can make patriotic-themed decorations like wreaths, banners, or bunting. Encourage children to make their own Fourth of July-themed artwork using paints, markers, or colored pencils. These crafts can be displayed in your home or used to add a festive touch to your picnic or parade participation.
